About 22 University of Hawaii graduate students who studied online courses in the Educational Technology Masters program took the opportunity of receiving their diplomas in the online virtual world, Second Life. Because these students aren’t located in Hawaii, they have an opportunity to “virtually” receive their diplomas and hear the commencement speech while their families also watch through their computers. Dr. Christine Sorensen, Dean at UH College of Education, says “Part of the issue for us in education is to adapt to the changing students, the changing learners. Because they’re growing up with technology, and are more comfortable with technology than faculty are at times.”
