New media is practically everywhere. The latest in online and hardware technology is discovered and invented practically every week. In entertainment, business, personal, and the arts, new media media technology is applied in every part of our life. I enjoy the study of new media, not only the technology side of it but also the psychological/social aspect of it as well. I’ve always been interested in the idea of cyberpsychology, cyberculture and new media art; how people interact with one another online and with technology. It’s still a young field but there is so much more to discover and research on the subject.
In a recent blog post I mentioned that my university, The University of Texas at Dallas, has a great program in computer animation and emerging media. I’m in the program and so far it’s been great and I’ve been learning alot about social media and new media. So far, other schools are developing programs to help young students to research and share ideas on new media.
As part of this blog, I look for other schools that have programs similar to the one I’m studying and so far I managed to find another school that offers students the education they need to pursue careers in emerging media research and innovation. Virginia Commonwealth University is a school located in Richmond, Virginia that offers a PhD in new media called Media, Art, and Text. What I like about the program is that it combines mass communications, television, advertising and the arts and implement technology in a student collaborative environment. What’s also great is that it is a very short program, only 42 credit hours which allows more time to do production workshops. If you are interested, definitely check it out.
